BOOTHBAY HARBOR – Last Thursday (12 June) it was time to get ready for the first lobster boat races of the season, Boothbay and Rockland on 14 and 15 June respectively. I needed to make sure the computer files were ready and everything worked. Whoops there was instantly a problem, I did not have a backup of toner for the printer and it was too late to order more. Would we make it through the weekend?
Normally, I would make the trip from Searsport, but SARI ANN I had been at John’s Bay Boat Company being rehabbed this winter. I picked her up in South Bristol and headed to Boothbay and Brown’s Wharf where I landed just before noon. One boat, Mike Dassett’s SAVING GRACE from Stonington, was there and he said he could smell the new paint and varnish as I neared the dock. It was not long before others began arriving and before dark there were about 15-20 racers on the dock and the party was well underway.
The only worry now was the forecast, which was calling for light rain during the morning hours with it clearing out by 1100. The big question was, would this keep some of the racers away?
In the morning, we did signups in the lounge of Brown’s Wharf as racers began arriving just after 0800. When sign-ups were done, we had 53 boats entered, nine more than last year.
When we headed out to the committee float there was a light rain falling and this continued until we were halfway done with the races.
There were a couple of noteworthy changes that took place during the winter. Richard Hildings bought Calvin Beal, Jr’s 30-footer JEANINE MARIE and renamed her CAP’T EM [Calvin Beal 30; 235-hp Cummins] and would be competing in Diesel Class A. Mason Vintinner, who is well known for racing SCREEN TIME [Corson 16; 90-hp Yamaha] in Work Boat Class B, purchased an Osmond 29, which he renamed AMY KATHREN [Osmond 29; 350-hp Cummins] and she would be entered in Diesel Class E. Robert Johnson purchased STARLIGHT EXPRESS II [Northern Bay 36; 1,200-hp MAN] from Alfred Osgood of Vinalhaven and renamed her MISS AVA ELAINE. Her class would be Diesel Class L. The newest boat at Boothbay was Lebaron Libby, Jr.’s GRAMP’S LEGACY [Libby 41; 500-hp FPT], being just a few weeks old. She would be racing in Diesel Class M(A). Another new boat was Tyler Childers’ BOTTOMS UP [Calvin Beal 20; 200-hp Yamaha] and she was competing in Work Boat Class C.
A couple of other noteworthy aspects were that there seemed to be a decline in the number of Work Boats (skiffs) and not sure what the reasoning is. These classes were developed for younger fishermen who were using boats under 24 feet in length. Is the cause that there are not as many younger fishermen, or the number of fishermen is about the same, but the interest has waned; or do these younger fishermen start in bigger boats. Another aspect that seems to be declining is in the Gasoline Classes. Just two gasoline boats signed up at Boothbay and three at Rockland, but just one made the line. This is understandable since very few boats are powered with gas engines. There also seems to be less boats in the lower diesel classes, but that is likely attributed to bigger boats with bigger engines.
There was just one boat in Work Boat Class A (CLASS A Skiffs 16-feet and under with outboards up to 30 hp, Operator 18 years and younger), Cameron Murphy’s NUGGET [Holland 14; 30-hp Honda], and at the helm was Justin Papkee and his four month old son Carmine, holding onto the throttle as they head down the course. Five boats were in Work Boat Class B (Inboards, outboards or outdrives, 31 to 90 hp) and the battle was going to be between Andy Correa and SCREEN TIME. It was close as they flew up the far side of the course, but Andy had a two-boat length lead when he crossed over the finish line. The most interesting boat in this race was Dave Johnston’s KAY’S MINI TUG [Rhodes 19; 60-hp Tohatsu], which was once a Rhodes 19 sailboat. He modified the hull to look like a tug and then built a nice little house on it. Another five boats came to the line for Work Boat Class C (Inboards, outboards or outdrive 91 hp and up) and there were three very strong competitors. No one was surprised to see Jacob Noyes in WHITE KNUCKLES [Aquasport 17; 175-hp Johnson] get the win followed over by Nathaniel Robinson’s DADDY DIDN’T BUY IT [Passamaquoddy 24; 350-hp Yamaha] and David Noyes’ ZIPPAH [Corson 16; 150-hp Evinrude].
There was just one boat, Andrew Taylor’s BLUE EYED GIRL [Morgan Bay 38, 900-hp Scania], in the Fastest Working Lobster Boat – Boothbay.
There were no entrants in Gasoline Classes A (4 & 6 cylinder 24 feet and over), B (V-8 up to 375 cid, 24 feet and up) and E (V-8, Over 525cid, 28 feet and over, superchargers/Turbos). There was one boat in Class C (V8, 376 to 525 cid, 28 feet and over), Jim Koehling’s BROWN EYED GIRL [Duffy 26; 454-hp Chevrolet] and one in Class D (V-8, 376 to 540 cid, 28 feet and over), Mark Freeman’s FOOLISH PLEASURE [30’ Custom Riley Beal; 800-hp 550 Chevy]. However, FOOLISH PLEASURE was still trying to get in the water as he needed more tide, so BROWN EYED GIRL made a solo run.
The only diesel class without an entry was Class O (Non-working boats, any length, any horsepower), but there were several that we combined to make the racing go quicker and be little bit more exciting. The winner of Diesel Class A (Up to 235 hp, 24 to 31 feet) was CAP’T EM with a speed of 22.5 mph followed by Martin Page’s KATHY LYNN [Nauset 27; 210-Cummins]. The only entry in Class B (Up to 235 hp, 32 feet and over) was Cole Poland’s C-GIRL [Flower’s 33, 200-hp John Deere], who had run down with Class A. Diesel Classes C (236 to 335 hp, 24 to 33 feet) and D (236 to 335 hp, 34 feet over) were combined. The winner of Class C was Mike Gillispie’s LEAH MORGAN [Stanley 28; 265-hp Cummins] followed by SAVING GRACE and the winner of Class D was Mark Davis’s WHISKEY GIRL [Duffy 34; 300-Isuzu]. FOOLISH PLEASURE finally got into the water and made her way to the starting line and she was sent down the course by herself at a speed of 42.4 mph. Next up was Diesel Class E (336 to 435 hp, 24 to 33 feet) with three competitors. It was no surprise to see Randy Durkee’s AUDREY MAY [Holland 32; 425-hp Cummins] running up the course in first. The real battle was between AMY KATHREN and Jake Dugas’ GUILTY PLEASURE [Mitchell Cove 32; 380-hp Cummins] and by just a boat length AMY KATHREN grabbed the second spot. Classes F (336 to 435 hp, 34 feet and over) and G (436 to 550 hp, 28 to 35 feet) were combined. The real race here was going to be between the two top boats in each class. First over the line was Mariena Beal’s MY TURN [Wayne Beal 32; 500-hp Cummins], the winner of Class G and Winfred Alley, Jr’s FAITH MELLE [Libby 34; 425-hp Cummins], the winner of Class F, came across in second. Taking second in Class F was Ed Torosian’s MS. ROSE [Mitchell Cove 35; 350-hp Cummins] and second in Class G was David Osgood’s SPLIT SECOND [Crowley Beal 33; 550-hp D-8 Volvo]. The three boats in Class H (436 to 550 hp, 36 feet and over) were led to the finish by Willie Coombs’s MELYNDA M. [Wayne Beal 36; 500-hp FPT]. He was followed by Brodie Eaton’s FALLEN ANGEL [Calvin Beal 36; 530-hp FPT] and Travis Otis’ FIRST TEAM [Northern Bay 36; 410-hp Sisu 645]. Classes I (551 to 700 hp, 28 to 35 feet) and J (551 to 700 hp, 36 feet and over) were combined. There has always been close racing in Class I between Chris Smith’s MISTY [Crowley Beal 33; 650 hp Scania] and Gary Genthner’s LIL’ LISA MARIE [Mussel Ridge 28; 600-hp FPT] and today the win went to LIL’ LISA MARIE. The winner of Class J was Sean Clemons’ MEAN KATHLEEN [Wayne Beal 36; 700-hp Scania] with second going to Kevin Glover’s QUICK STEP [Holland 38; 600-hp Detroit]. Class K (701 to 900 hp, 28 feet and over), which had five boats, was combined with the one boat, MISS AVA ELAINE in Class L (901 hp, 28 feet and over). MISS AVA ELAINE showed the way to the finish as expected, but who would be the top boat in Class K. BLUE EYED GIRL was in a tight battle with LA BELLA VITA [Northern Bay 38; 815-hp FPT], but at the line it was BLUE EYED GIRL by a boat length. Next up was Class M(A) (40 feet and over, up to 500 hp) with three boats on the line. The question was how fast would GRAMP’S LEGACY be. With the drop of the flag, we could see that she was leading the rest with a speed of 29.2 mph. The battle was now for second and that went to Alan Knowlton’s SEA URCHIN [Young Brothers 45, 425-hp John Deere] and Justin Papkee’s PULL N’ PRAY [Wayne Beal 40; 500-hp Isuzu] took third. There were five boats on the line for Class M(B) (40 feet and over, 501 to 750 hp) and there was no surprise when we saw Eric Beal’s KIMBERLY ANN [Calvin Beal 42; 750-hp FPT] flying up the left side of the course followed by Mike Shepard’s ALEXSA ROSE [Morgan Bay 43; 750-hp John Deere]. Third went to Chip Johnson’s FIVE STARS [Calvin Beal 42; 750-hp Renault-Mack]. There were two boats each in Class N(A) (40 feet and over; 751 to 1,000 hp) and N(B) (40 feet and over; 1,001 hp and over) so they were combined. There was going to be a good race in Class N(A) between Dana Beal’s NATALIE E. [Libby 41; 1,000-hp FPT] and Ryan Lemieux’s OBSESSION [Young Brothers 40; 1,000-hp Caterpillar]. It seems that whoever gets the jump at the start is the winner. As they neared the finish it was close, but OBSESSION had the edge and got the win with a speed of 43.9 mph. In Class N(B) James West’s PIER PRESSURE [Osmond 40; 1,001+-hp FPT] was able to get by for the win with Tom Clemons’ 4 LADIES [Wesmac SW46; 1,000-hp Caterpillar] second.
Another dwindling class was Wooden Boats. There were no entrants in Class A (Any hp, up to 35 feet 11 inches) and just one, Ann Johansen’s SARI ANN I [40’ Johns Bay Boat, 375-hp 3208 Caterpillar], in Class B (Any hp, 36 feet and over).
Now came the Gasoline Free-for-All and both gas entrants were on the line. Everyone could hear when the flag dropped as the throttles were pushed to the bulkheads. FOOLISH PLEASURE slide over for the win with BROWN EYED GIRL back a couple of boat lengths.
Ten boats were on the line for the Diesel Free-for-All and no one was surprised to see MISS AVA ELAINE leading the pack followed by a really close battle for second between BLUE EYED GIRL and LA BELLA VITA, and this time LA BELLA VITA got second.
Only three boats opted to be in the final race of the day, Fastest Working Lobster Boat, and they finished just as they did in the Diesel Free-for-All.
When the races were finished, most of the boats were heading for Rockland. It was a little overcast in Boothbay, but as we neared the Mussel Ridge Channel the sun came out and it was a nice trip the rest of the way.
ROCKLAND – It was a quiet, but cool night at Journey’s End Marina in Rockland. I figured there would not be many signups as I had signed up most of the racers in Boothbay. I was set up just after 0800 and several new racers came in and when sign-ups were concluded we had 48 boats entered, four more than last year.
It was a beautiful day, bright sunshine with a SE breeze as the committee boat made its way out to the finish line. Again, there were no entrants in Gasoline Classes A and B and Diesel Classes D, N(B) and O. There were also some Classes with just one or two boats and we combined them so we could speed things up.
The big news was that Josh Linscott had BLACK DIAMOND [Holland 32, 672 Chevrolet] towed down from Islesboro to compete. We knew that they had not really run the boat and wondered what kind of problems they might have. When she was fired up, she ran rough and then would die. They tried everything, but no luck. Randy Durkee said after the race that they all thought it was the fuel. She burns alcohol and this fuel was left over from last year. Randy added that it had been stored in a plastic container and they do not leak, but they do allow water in and this would ruin the fuel. The only way to store this fuel is in a steel container. Hopefully, they are good to go for Bass Harbor.
Two boats were entered in Work Boat Class A and the win went to Baxter Holland’s BABY BARON [Holland 14, 30-hp Yamaha] with a speed of 24.4 mph. Last year he was not very excited about racing, but this year he was more than eager to be competing. Second went to NUGGET. Just two boats were on the line in Class B and the winner was SCREEN TIME followed by NUGGET. In Class C there were five boats and it was not surprising to see WHITE KNUCKLES get the win with ZIPPAH second followed by DADDY DIDN’T BUY IT.
As we neared the Gasoline Classes it was learned that FOOLISH PLEASURE had an issue and she would not be racing. So, we were now down to just one boat, BROWN EYED GIRL and she ran the course and took the win in Class C.
It was onto the Diesel Classes. In Class A CAP’T EM got the win with Ed Upham’s BLACK MAGIC [Nauset 27; 135-hp Perkins] taking second. Four boats were on the line for Class B and the winner was C-GIRL, followed by Jeff Gove’s SHOCKWAVE [Harold Gower 38; 210-hp Cummins] in second and Joe Arsenault’s SEABOUND [J. Ervin Jones 32; 120-hp Perkins] in third. The winner of Class C was again LEAH MORGAN with SAVING GRACE second. Class E was run but had to be re-raced as we had missed one of the racers. The winner was AUDREY MAY, followed by Danny Eaton’s DESTINY [Crowley 28; 420-hp Yanmar] and in third was AMY KATHREN. There was just one boat in Class G, MY TURN, and she was combined with the three boats in Class F. MY TURN was the first over the finish line for the win in Class G with a speed of 40.1 mph. She was followed closely by FAITH MELLE, who got the win in Class F. Second, in Class F went to MS. ROSE and Avery Waterman’s SOUTHERN COMFORT [Mitchell Cove 35; 405-hp Cummins] took third. Four boats came to the line in Class H and MELYNDA M. got her second win of the weekend, with FALLEN ANGEL second and FIRST TEAM third. Class I and J were combined again. As the racers came up the course the battle was between LIL’ LISA MARIE and MISTY, and at the line it was MISTY by half a boat length. The only boat in Class J was Jason McDonald’s HARD GOIN’S [Holland 38, 670-hp Cummins]. Class K and L were combined, each having two racers. The winner of Class K was LA BELLA VITA and second went to Steven Osgood’s SHOOTIN’ STAR [Northern Bay 36; 750-hp John Deere]. First in Class L was Alfred Osgood’s STARLIGHT EXPRESS III [Northern Bay 36; 1,200-hp MAN], skippered by Jeremy Beal with MISS AVA ELAINE second. This was the race I made a big mistake, when I identified the wrong boat as the winner. We re-ran the race and STARLIGHT EXPRESS took the win. When I got home, I downloaded the photos into the computer I could see what I had done. This, I explained on Facebook correcting the issue. Next was Class M(A) and it was GRAMP’S LEGACY for the win with SEA URCHIN second and PULL N’ PRAY third. In Class M(B) again it was KIMBERLY ANN followed by ALEXSA ROSE and David Vintinner’s MASTER MASON [South Shore 42; 700-hp Volvo] in third. Now came Class N(A) and it was one the judges needed to watch closely. As NATALIE E. and OBSESSION came up the course they looked bow to bow. However, when they neared the finish line NATALIE E. had a half boat length lead and went on for the win. Third went to Erick Harjula’s NOAH & LILY [Wayne Beal 46; 1,000-hp FPT].
There was just BROWN EYED GIRL in the Gasoline Free-for-All so she ran down by herself.
Four boats came to the line for the Diesel Free-for-All and one was not STARLIGHT EXPRESS III, which opted not to compete again. The win went to MISS AVA ELAINE with LA BELLA VITA second and ALEXSA ROSE third.
Next up was the wooden boat races and again just one competitor, SARI ANN I, came to the line for Class B.
Only two boats went to the line for the final race of the day, Fastest Lobster Boat and this was won by MISS AVA ELAINE with LA BELLA VITA second.
The next weekend there is no racing, but the following weekend we will be racing at Bass Harbor on 29 June. Hopefully, the weather stays good, because I remember we almost drowned there last year.
